Twitter seems to have quietly released its premium Blue subscription in Malaysia, giving users here access to the platform’s exclusive features. This is confirmed as a check on the Twitter Blue FAQ page shows that Malaysia has been added to the list of countries where it’s available, along with 41 other countries.

The local cost of the subscription seems to depend on what device you subscribe from. It is available for RM35 per month or RM369 per year if you subscribe through the Twitter web page, which already sounds like a hefty amount.

However, if you want to make your purchase through the Twitter app on iOS, the price skyrockets to RM50 monthly or RM519.90 annually, presumably because of Apple’s app store commission fees. Those on Android might be out of luck as it seems that Twitter Blue is still listed as “coming soon”, although we can assume it will also be pricier than purchasing through its website.

Twitter has not made any official announcement about this massive expansion yet, so thank you to tipster @hiw200 for pointing it out. Interestingly, Malaysia is one of three South East Asian countries included in the rollout, alongside Thailand and the Philippines.

Currently, Twitter Blue offers the ability to edit tweets, upload longer videos in 1080p, have early access to experimental features, and even post tweets up to 4,000 characters. Of course, subscribers will also get a blue checkmark on their profile, with the stipulation that they verify their phone number.

While it’s fascinating to see Malaysia being added to its limited list of availability, it will be interesting to see if Twitter can convince local users of the subscription’s worth. For comparison, Netflix’s basic plan now costs just RM28 per month while a Spotify subscription would only set you back RM14.90 per month.

Thanks for the tip, @hiw200!
