Suspect in drug case dies while receiving treatment in Ipoh hospital

IPOH: A senior citizen who was arrested in connection with a drug case on Jalan Carey here on Saturday (Sept 10), has died at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) on Tuesday (Sept 13).

Ipoh district police chief ACP Yahaya Hassan said the 62-year-old male suspect was in an unwell state at the Jelapang Police Station at about 9am Tuesday, when he was due to be taken to the Magistrate’s Court here to be charged.

“The police contacted the hospital and the detainee was sent to the hospital in an ambulance,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Yahaya said the detainee was confirmed dead following emergency treatment at about 10.30am, adding that the case was being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Unit on Deaths in Custody (USJKT) under the Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS).

“An autopsy will be done tomorrow to find out the cause of death,” he said. – Bernama
