KUALA LUMPUR: The Opposition will not support the amendments to the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 (Act 342) in their current form, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“Today, the honorable Health Minister presented the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Amendment) Act 2021 Bill for the first reading.

“The Dewan Rakyat understands that the bill will be debated this Thursday, which is the last day of the Parliament session for this year,” he said in a Facebook post Tuesday (Dec 14).

He added that having studied the entire Bill and listened to the views of MPs and responses from the people, the Opposition could not support the amendments in its current form.

He said the responses showed that people were upset with the excessive amount of fines and compounds that may open the door to abuse of power and corruption.

“I have stated this position to the Prime Minister,” he said.
