A new player has just entered the Malaysian consumer tech market this month in the form of FreeYond. Hailing from Shenzhen, the brand was just established last year by Dr Yu Lei who was previously the Vice President of Gionee and has begun its Malaysian journey by offering two smartphone models including the M5 and F9.

While it is pretty clear that both models are focusing on affordability given their price point, FreeYond has positioned M5 as the more premium model out of the two. Powered by a Unisoc Tiger T606 processor, the device also features 8GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage alongside the support for a microSD card with a capacity of up to 1TB.

The device also comes with a 6.52-inch HD+ 90Hz IPS display that houses an 8MP selfie camera within its teardrop notch. As for the phone’s main photography tool, it consisted of a primary camera with a 50MP Samsung ISOCELL JN1 sensor and a 5P f/1.8 lens while the module also features an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera and a 2MP f/2.6 macro camera.

Completing M5’s general specification is a 5000mAh battery which can be fully charged within 2.5 hours via a fast charger with a maximum power rating of 18W. Meanwhile, the lower-end F9 also features a 5000mAh battery although it can only support chargers with a power rating of up to 10W.

As opposed to its higher-end sibling, the F9 which is running on a Unisoc SC9863A processor is available in two memory and internal storage configurations. Specifically, the variant with 2GB of RAM has been paired with 64GB internal storage while there is the version with 3GB of RAM and 128GB storage but regardless of your choice, both versions still support microSD cards of up to 512GB.

Similar to M5, the F9 also comes with a 6.52-inch HD+ IPS display but without the 90Hz refresh rate capability. The phone also has a more modest 13MP primary camera on its back although it still features a 2MP macro camera and an 8MP selfie camera.
