KLANG: During the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Klang was one of the worst hit places with people’s remains piling-up at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR).

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said on Monday (July 11) that there was an increase in the number of new cases, and this could be due to asymptomatic people carrying and spreading the virus.

However, Klang appears to have been spared from the viral onslaught this time around, said HTAR director Dr Zulkarnain Mohd Rawi.

“Klang is under control with admissions for Covid-19 hovering between 15 and 20 cases only daily, and the patients get discharged between five to six days later,’’ he said when contacted.

Dr Zulkarnain explained the protocol divided the number of cases into green, yellow and red categories, and when admission reaches 75 cases in a day, it activates the red category.

He said there were also no fatalities currently and prior to that, it was about one death a week from people with various comorbidities.

“In March, there were about 150 admissions but currently, there are about 51 people being treated for Covid-19 at the hospital,’’ he added.

Meanwhile, Klang MP Charles Santiago urged HTAR to announce daily admissions, as well as fatalities on its social media pages.

He added that this way, the public would be kept abreast with the Covid-19 situation in Klang.

“The numbers are on the increase and we will know the gravity of the situation only if the hospital shares information on the number of new cases admitted at the intensive care unit and how many cases come in daily, as well as the number of discharges,’’ he added.

He said it was brought to his attention that many people who test positive for Covid-19 but are free of symptoms do not report themselves to the health authorities and are going about their business as usual.

“I have been informed that some companies are also asking their asymptomatic workers infected with Covid-19 to come in to work,’’ alleged Santiago.

Klang MCA youth chief Datuk BK Tan said he was aware that the number of cases was on the rise in Klang.

“I personally know of many new cases and all of them had gone on self-quarantine, as they had symptoms such as mild cough and sore throat,’’ said Tan.

He said from observation, people were still very cautious and aware that the Covid-19 pandemic is still ongoing.

“So, they are taking the necessary precautions to prevent getting infected,’’ he added.
