KOTA KINABALU: Police fired shots at a car after the driver allegedly tried to ram their patrol vehicle in a high-speed chase here on Tuesday (Jan 11).

Kota Kinabalu OCPD ACP Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said the incident, which was recorded by road users and went viral, happened following a domestic violence report at the Tanjung Aru beach area.

He said following the report, policemen had responded and went to the scene where five people comprising four men and a woman were asked to cooperate.

The five including a couple were asked to produce their identification documents.

He said initial investigations found that when the couple had shown their identification cards, the driver of the car had allegedly grabbed the couple’s identification cards from the police who were questioning the others, before fleeing with the duo.

Cops then chased after them and upon reaching the city centre, the suspects had attempted to make a U-turn before making a stop due to the congested road.

Police managed to catch up but the driver allegedly tried to ram their patrol vehicle.

This prompted the cops to fire two shots at the car, ACP Zaidi said.

The suspects managed to run out of the car and fled on foot while police chased after them in the patrol vehicle.

It is learnt that a woman was nabbed not long after but two men were still at large.

A manhunt is currently on for the two suspects.

Police have yet to release more details of the case as they are believed to be still questioning the woman.
