KOTA TINGGI: Close to RM2mil worth of smuggled cigarettes were found and seized by the police following checks on a lorry here.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Hussin Zamora said that two men, who were in their 20s and 40s were also arrested during the incident at about 1.30am on Saturday (Sept 24).

“Acting on a tip-off, the police had stopped a lorry that was being driven by a man in his 40s at a traffic light at Jalan Sg Renggit – Kota Tinggi.

“Following checks on the vehicle, we found a total of 223 large boxes of cigarettes where its customs duties and taxes were believed to have not been paid,” he said in a statement here on Saturday (Sept 24).

He noted the other suspect who was driving in a separate car was also arrested at the same location not long after the first arrest was made.

“The total amount of items seized was about RM2mil while the value of the cigarettes alone was about RM1.906mil,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.

He also stressed that the police take the matter seriously and would take stern actions against those involved in such illegal activities.
