PLUS Expressways will be phasing out the Touch n’ Go (TnG) card and SmartTAG as payment options for the closed toll route within the North-South Expressway between Juru in Penang and Skudai in Johor. These payment options will be fully replaced by RFID.

According to the announcement by the Ministry of Works (KKR), the RFID payment system will go live at toll plazas within the route starting from 15 January 2022. However, the discontinuation of the TnG and SmartTAG options will be done in stages although the ministry did not provide the exact timeline in today’s announcement.

Nevertheless, KKR noted that this will allow highways to set up more RFID lanes before the eventual implementation of the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll system that allows vehicles to make payment at toll plazas without stopping. PLUS previously implemented the Automated Number Plate Recognition system in preparation for MLFF.

At the moment, the TnG RFID tag which is tied to the TnG eWallet platform is priced at RM 35 per piece. You can choose to install it yourself although if you somehow don’t feel confident of putting it on your own, you can always visit the nearest authorised fitment centres.
