Huawei Mate50 Series launch Malaysia date

Huawei has announced that its Mate50 flagship series will officially be making their debut in Malaysia next week. As you may recall from our previous report, the standard model had appeared in SIRIM’s listing earlier this month, signifying its imminent launch for the local market. Though still not listed in the same database yet, the brand’s announcement solidifies that the Pro model will also be arriving alongside the vanilla Mate50.

As a refresher, here’s a quick rundown on the specifications of both Huawei Mate50 models based on their Chinese launch. But before we go on, keep in mind that there is a chance that the local versions may differ in terms of hardware and features – especially the ability to make emergency calls and messages via satellite, which relies on a connection to China’s Beidou 3 satellite. Of course, the other thing to take note is the lack of Google Mobile Services (GMS) and 5G connectivity on either model due to US sanctions.

To start things off, we have the standard Mate50 model which sports a flat 6.7-inch OLED display with FHD+ resolution, 10-bit colour depth, and 90 Hz refresh rate. Under its hood is a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, along with 8 GB of RAM, up to 512 GB of internal storage, and a 4,460 mAh battery with wired and wireless fast charging support at 66 W and 50 W respectively.

On the back of the phone is a triple camera setup powered by Huawei’s own XMAGE imaging system, which replaces the Leica-developed enhancements after the partnership between the two companies ended. It consists of a 50 MP primary shooter with variable aperture (f/1.4 to f/4.0), a 13 MP ultra-wide, and a 12 MP telephoto with 5X optical zoom. Meanwhile, housed within the punch-hole cutout on the phone’s display is a 13 MP selfie camera.

Next up is the Mate50 Pro model. Unlike its sibling, this variant packs a larger and curved 6.74-inch OLED display with FHD+ resolution, 10-bit colour depth, and a higher 120 Hz refresh rate. Interestingly, Huawei has decided to give the phone a notched display instead of cutouts in favour to house a 13 MP front-facing camera and a 3D facial scanner. Internally, the Pro comes with the same chipset and offerings as the vanilla model, though it features a slightly larger battery capacity of 4,700 mAh which comes with 66 W wired and 50 W wireless fast charging support.

Similarly, the phone’s imaging capabilities is also powered by the brand’s XMAGE system, as well as featuring the same 50 MP primary camera with a variable aperture and a 13 MP ultra-wide. However, what sets this particular model apart from its sibling is the larger 64 MP telephoto which comes with 3.5X optical and 100X digital zooming capabilities.

The Huawei Mate50 series is slated to launch in Malaysia on 3 November 2022, which is on Thursday next week. Naturally, the expected pricing and availability of both smartphones will only be disclosed by then. Additionally, the company revealed that it will also be debuting the nova 10 smartphone series, Watch GT 3 SE, and a new Matepad series for the local market during the same event.
