With COVID-19 still being a concern, it’s not surprising to see massive in-person video gaming events like E3 getting cancelled. In fact, that’s what happened to last year’s iteration of the event, with an online event taking its place instead. Though this year, it looks like even the digital version of the event is getting scrapped.
The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the ones that organise the usually annual event, previously said that it won’t be hosting a physical one this year. In a statement to Kotaku, the association says that “there will also be no digital E3 showcase in 2022”. The association says that it will instead be using its resources to deliver a “revitalised physical and digital E3 experience next summer”.
This would be the second year that E3 has been completely cancelled. The first time was back in 2020, at the height of the global pandemic. With the digital event being held last year, you’d think that the ESA would do the same this year.
Though even a digital E3 getting cancelled should be no real surprise. Publishers and platform owners have had their own digital events independent of E3. Nintendo’s Direct and Sony’s State of Play streams immediately come to mind as examples.
